Top brass Shirley Band scoops third place in Regional Brass Band Championships - And qualifies for place in National Championships
The Shirley Band, a 28-strong brass band from Solihull, has clinched a coveted place in the annual National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain - after coming third in the Midlands regional championships.
The regional championship saw the band perform set-work, A London Overture, by composer Philip Sparke, in the first section of the championship, which has three more divisions below the section Shirley compete in, as well as one above.
With three bands qualifying for the first-section championship from each region from across the UK, the band will now travel to Cheltenham in September to compete against up to 20 bands who have also qualified from each region.
Brian Johnson, the band's secretary, said: "We're absolutely delighted with the result. The competition was probably our most difficult competition ever.
"It will be such an honour to be representing Shirley and Solihull at the championships. Furthermore, our result means that we will just be one of three bands to be representing the Midlands region, a real honour indeed."
The band's best result before the competition held on March 7, was when the band became Midlands Area Champions in the Second Section in 2003.
