Shirley Band Success at Solo and Quartet Contests

Members of the band, young and, not quite so young, have taken part in three Solo and Quartet Contests around the Midlands this year with great success.

In April at the Leicester Brass Band Association Junior and Senior Solo, Duet and Quartet Contest held at Loughborough Endowed Schools, the band's quartet of Rob, Catherine, Anne and Richard competed in the Open Quartet section and came away with second prize.

The West Midlands Brass Band Association Solo, Duet and Quartet contest took place in May at Studley High School and Shirley Band had a good number of both entries and successes in the Solo and Quartet classes.

In the Solo sections, Lily won the 8 years and Under Solo class, also taking the youngest girl award whilst in the 12, 13 and 14 years old classes, Becky came third in the Slow Melody with Tom fourth. Becky then went on to win a fabulous first prize in the Air Varie class with a stunning performance of Napoli in a very strong field of competitors. Later in the day was the Adult Quartet class which was won by the Shirley Quartet of Tamzin, Claire, Anne and Brian with the Shirley Nott Quartet of Dave, Laura, Sally and Lawrence coming third.

The third contest of the year was the Coventry and Warwickshire Brass Festival. In another good day out, Catherine and Anne took second prize in the 15 years and over Duets whilst the Shirley Nott Quartet of Catherine, Laura, Sally and Lawrence had a great second place in the Open Quartets, sandwiched between the two Jaguar Land Rover quartets who took first and third places.

Everyone agreed they were all great days out and hugely rewarding to see the wealth of brilliant young brass players in the region and, with an age gap of 56 years between Shirley Band's youngest and oldest entrants just in these solo and quartet contests, and the age gap in the full band of 68 years between youngest and oldest, it really does show that the band has something to offer for everyone and we are all now looking forward to competing again next year.
